Los Fresnos win in District 32

After this weekend, with Los Fresnos avenging last year's bi district loss to Ryan Shazier 3XL Jersey Weslaco High on Friday, all four 32 5A schools will advance to the area round.

In the week leading up to his team's bi district showdown, Rivera coach Tom Chavez implored his players to avoid satisfaction for simply having secured a postseason spot. On paper, it seemed like a tall order, with the Raiders going up against McAllen High, champion of its district.

With Friday's win over the Bulldogs, however, Rivera will play longer into November than it has since the early 2000s.

"We came a long way from where we started. It's pretty unbelievable," Chavez said. "The scores of our first four games and the way we played, it wasn't very pretty. But through hard work and coaches doing a great job and everybody buying Stephon Tuitt L Jersey into the program, it just came through for us.

"Got to give those guys a lot of credit. We made a lot of terrible mistakes early. We weren't playing very well. But we just kept on working, kept on playing. And there was a lot of determination from these kids."

Chavez described the mood Friday night as "great," saying his players enjoyed their celebration. The team was back at school Saturday morning, reviewing game film.

During that session, Chavez noticed his offensive linemen's performance stood out. He also credited his defense for playing "probably its best game of the season" and coming up with critical stops.

All in all, he said, "It was a complete game for us offensively and defensively. They complemented each other. They made plays that they needed to make to keep getting first downs and give us possession. They did a great job, they really did."

The Raiders' last postseason run came in 2003, when Chavez last led the program. In only his second season back, the longtime coach didn't downplay the win, saying it was "definitely our best game" since his return.

"We put just about every phase of the game together," he said. "We made very few mistakes, other than some blocking errors. But we forced turnovers and we had big fourth down plays. I think it was definitely a big game."

It was especially satisfying for quarterback Javier Cruz, who was a tight end last season. The senior adjusted to a new role as the starting quarterback, and Friday he propelled his team further than it reached the year prior by scoring the go ahead touchdown during the extra session.

"They're a great team," Cruz said. "It's just going to take a total team effort. We just need to go out there and play. Special teams, offense, defense leave it all out on the field. Go out there and execute.
